APE is an international scientific programme. The M-55 Geophysica stratospheric aircraft flies with scientific instruments onboard to study the chemistry-physics of the stratosphere.

APE
began as the Italo- Russian Airborne Polar Experiment supported by the Italian PNRA (Antarctic Programme) to exploit the Geophysica aircraft for atmospheric science research in Antarctica.

This experiment is still very much alive but now, thanks to input from the European Commission's Environment Research Programme and other sources, the programme is developing into a truly international
Airborne Platform for Earth observation.
